Make the client problem concrete before selling an AI service

Start with the questions a client's customers ask when choosing a provider. Select a few that reflect real services, markets and buying decisions, then document the returned answers and visible sources. Look for a material finding: an incorrect service claim, an outdated business identity, an unsupported professional description or an important customer question the website never answers. A missing mention is an observation to investigate, not proof that the business needs an expensive new platform.

Use the finding to explain a bounded opportunity. If an AI answer describes a firm's old specialism and cites an outdated profile, show that evidence and the current business facts. Explain which information the agency can correct and which aspects remain outside its control. Keep the discovery conversation grounded in the client's offer. This creates a credible path to a paid assessment or implementation phase without relying on a frightening score or claiming that the agency knows every reason a model produced an answer.

Sell the work that follows the finding

Define the assessment sample, platforms, dates, locations and evidence fields before pricing the audit. Separate branded accuracy questions from unbranded discovery questions. A deliverable should include the tested scenarios, source inspection, claim-level findings, limitations and prioritized recommendations. Then scope implementation as explicit tasks: revised service explanations, approved business facts, profile corrections, internal links, technical fixes supported by diagnosis and a later review. Identify who supplies proof and who approves regulated or specialist claims.

For example, a professional-services client may need a verified specialism brief, rewritten page sections, updated biographies and correction requests to relevant directories. Specify those outputs and how they will be checked. Do not sell a guaranteed citation count or a permanent position in generated answers. Google states that its AI features use the established search foundations, so an AI label alone does not justify rebuilding a sound site or installing unsupported special files. The value lies in a better investigation and competent implementation of justified changes.

Build a report that supports the next client decision

Keep the baseline and later observations comparable. Record the exact questions, context and collection method, and retain both favourable and unfavourable results. Distinguish a company mention from a citation, factual accuracy, referral traffic and a qualified inquiry. Those are different events. If a monitoring tool changes its prompt set or collection method, annotate the change before interpreting a trend. A blended score without its underlying sample can conceal the issue the client actually needs to solve.

Use the review meeting to show the chain of evidence: original finding, approved action, completed change and later observations. State what remains uncertain and whether another phase is justified. Sometimes the next useful work is a deeper service explanation; sometimes it is an outside profile correction or further observation. This reporting approach helps agencies sell continuing implementation where a real backlog exists, while making a completed one-off engagement a valid outcome when no continuing task has been established.

Questions and answers

How should an agency explain AI visibility work to a client who just wants more leads?

Connect the work to the client's buying journey. Show the questions being assessed, the inaccurate or incomplete information found and how that could affect a prospect's understanding of the business. Explain the specific improvements you can deliver and how you will check them. Keep observed AI mentions separate from traffic, inquiries and sales; a recommendation is not itself a lead. Where measurement is available, agree which business outcomes will be reviewed alongside the visibility sample. Avoid presenting AI work as a guaranteed replacement for other channels. A useful proposal gives the client a clear reason for the investigation and implementation, with honest limits on what the evidence can establish.

Should we sell an AI audit as a standalone project or a monthly retainer?

Use a standalone project when the first need is diagnosis and a decision about what to implement. Define its sample, evidence review, findings and handover. A retainer is appropriate when there is an agreed continuing workload, such as approved content improvements, profile maintenance, technical implementation and periodic measurement. Specify the work and review cadence rather than charging only to repeat a dashboard score. You can offer implementation after an audit, but the client should understand that the diagnostic deliverable has value on its own. Let the evidence and operational backlog determine the next scope instead of assuming every prospect needs the same recurring package.

What evidence must be included in an agency AI visibility audit?

Include the exact questions, date, platform and relevant location or session context; the returned descriptions; the businesses and links shown; and notes from inspecting the cited sources. Compare factual claims with an approved client reference. Separate incorrect statements, unclear claims and simple omissions. Explain how the scenarios were selected and what the sample does not represent. Each recommendation should point to a finding, an asset that can be changed and a way to verify the implementation. If the source of an error is unknown, preserve that uncertainty. A screenshot collection or unexplained score cannot support the same level of decision-making as a documented, repeatable assessment.

How do we respond when a client asks for guaranteed AI recommendations?

Explain which commitments the agency can make: a defined investigation, accurate reporting, agreed implementation and quality checks. Show the proposed deliverables and the relevant platform guidance, then distinguish those commitments from selection by an external system. Offer to measure comparable scenarios over time and report both improvements and unchanged results. Do not substitute a vague success promise for a concrete scope. If the client requires a guaranteed recommendation outcome as the condition of purchase, the offer does not fit that requirement. A credible service agreement can still be commercially strong because it specifies useful work and accountability without pretending the agency controls every generated answer.
