Test the recommendation a prospective client actually needs
Start with the decision being made, not a general request for the best lawyer. A useful scenario could be finding a local firm that reviews an existing estate plan, locating help with estate administration, or comparing how firms describe an initial consultation. Select only services and jurisdictions your firm covers. Keep these scenarios hypothetical and free of names, family circumstances or information taken from client files. The purpose is to examine public discovery, not to ask an AI system to resolve a legal matter.
Record a small, stable set of scenarios across the platforms your audience might use. Save the wording, date, location context, answer and displayed links. A firm named in an answer is a visibility observation. Whether its practice, jurisdiction and contact details are described correctly is a separate question. Do not treat a favorable description as an endorsement, and do not infer market-wide visibility from a single response.
Give public information a clear professional owner
Build a source map for the facts a prospective client needs to verify. Practice pages explain the work, biographies identify the relevant lawyers, office pages explain where and how consultations occur, and professional directories can corroborate current professional information. Make relationships clear: a lawyer's credential belongs to that lawyer, and experience in one service does not establish that the whole firm handles every related matter. Assign an owner to review each type of information when the practice changes.
Read the sources displayed with an AI answer before deciding what to fix. An outdated biography, an ambiguous service description and an inaccurate external directory listing require different responses. Correct your own page first when it is wrong, then request a factual update from a directory where appropriate. If you cannot identify the origin of a claim, label the source unknown. Repeating the claim in new content or attributing it to a guessed source makes the investigation less reliable.
Improve useful explanations before buying an AI visibility promise
The most useful content often answers a concrete pre-consultation question: what the firm handles, how an appointment is arranged, who reviews the matter and what the first discussion can establish. Write an answer that stands on its own, then add the boundaries and links a reader needs. Avoid a page that spends several paragraphs announcing the firm's expertise but never explains the service. Professional review is especially important when a marketing sentence could be read as a statement about legal rights or likely outcomes.
Google says its AI search features do not require special AI optimization beyond the existing SEO foundations. Treat a proposal for new markup, extra files or large volumes of AI content as a proposal that needs evidence, not a prerequisite. First verify that important pages can be found, understood and maintained. Evaluate subsequent recommendations alongside accurate inquiries and consultations. A change in AI mentions can be interesting without establishing that the firm has gained appropriate clients.
Questions and answers
Why might AI recommend our estate-planning firm for a service we do not offer?
An answer may combine broad descriptions, outdated material or information about similarly named firms. The response alone usually cannot establish the cause. Save the exact statement and inspect the links the system supplies. Compare them with your current service pages, lawyer biographies, directory entries and office details. If your website says only that you handle all estate matters, clarify the actual scope in plain language. If a directory contains the wrong service, request a correction there. Keep unsupported claims separate from confirmed errors. This approach produces specific work your team can review, whereas rewriting every page based on one surprising answer can create more ambiguity.
Do we need separate content for every AI assistant?
Begin with a reliable public explanation of the practice that a person can understand on your own website. Service scope, current lawyer information, jurisdiction and consultation arrangements should not change depending on the platform. You can then observe how different systems use or describe that information and investigate a platform-specific issue where evidence supports it. Avoid building many almost identical pages aimed at individual assistants. For Google's AI search features, Google explicitly says no special optimization is required beyond its established SEO practices. Other platforms may operate differently, so do not extend that statement into a universal guarantee of access, citation or inclusion.
Should we answer questions about wills and trusts to attract AI citations?
Answer relevant questions when the firm can provide useful, professionally reviewed public education. Choose questions that help a reader understand the scope of a service or prepare for a consultation, rather than publishing legal conclusions for hypothetical fact patterns. Identify the jurisdiction where it matters, give the responsible professional a review role, and link a detailed answer to the appropriate service. Do not add material simply because a tool reports that it might receive a citation. An accurate explanation can be useful even when no AI system quotes it; a citation does not make inaccurate or overly broad legal content acceptable.
How do we know whether AI visibility work is helping the practice?
Track three separate things: how often the firm appears in your defined observation set, whether the descriptions are accurate, and whether appropriate inquiries arrive. Record direct referrals when a prospect volunteers that they used an AI assistant, but allow for people who use several channels or do not remember. Review actual site visits and intake outcomes without claiming that every change came from AI. A correction from an unsupported jurisdiction to the correct one is an accuracy improvement even if mention frequency stays the same. Set a repeatable review schedule and preserve the prompts so later observations can be compared honestly.
