Define a useful enquiry before paying for more visits
Write down the service, location and customer type the campaign is meant to attract. Include jobs the business cannot accept and times when enquiries can actually be handled. This definition becomes the basis for keywords, ad wording, landing-page content and lead review.
Separate the stages you intend to measure. An ad click, telephone-link click, submitted form, answered call and qualified opportunity are different events. Decide which actions indicate meaningful progress and check how each is recorded. A campaign optimized around a loose interaction can look busy while delivering little usable work.
For an illustrative appliance company, a service enquiry may require an accepted appliance type and a location within coverage. Requests for replacement parts or warranty work the company cannot provide should not be treated as equivalent successes. Establish that distinction with the person handling the calls before evaluating performance.
Read actual search terms and the page they reach
Review the searches that triggered ads, not only the keywords you entered. Look for recurring mismatches such as jobs, training, free instructions, parts or services outside the offer. Use appropriate negative keywords carefully, checking that an exclusion does not block a useful variation.
Compare the ad promise with the landing page. If an ad promotes a specific service, the destination should explain that service, its boundaries and the contact process. Do not send every campaign to a generic homepage and expect visitors to reconstruct the offer. Be precise about assessment charges, availability and coverage.
Review location and scheduling settings against the real operating model. A business that can take calls overnight but cannot dispatch staff should not present those capabilities as the same thing. Campaign decisions should reflect what the team can deliver, including seasonal capacity and the time needed to follow up.
Evaluate cost against qualified opportunities
Keep a simple log connecting enquiries with their qualification outcome where your measurement setup permits. Review why leads were unsuitable: service mismatch, distance, timing, budget expectations or a failed response. This makes it easier to distinguish campaign problems from sales-process problems.
Prioritize one demonstrated issue at a time. Repair broken tracking before drawing conclusions from conversion totals. Improve relevance before buying more of the same unsuitable traffic. Increase spend only with a clear view of service capacity and the economics you are measuring. A lower cost per form is not necessarily an improvement if the forms no longer represent suitable prospective customers.
Questions and answers
Why am I paying for clicks that do not turn into jobs?
Investigate the full path: the actual search, ad promise, landing-page explanation, contact function and follow-up. Some visitors may want a different service or fall outside coverage. Others may be suitable but leave because the page does not explain the process or because nobody responds.
Review a sample of enquiries and lost opportunities with the team. Categorize the reasons before changing bids or budgets. If the traffic is irrelevant, refine targeting and exclusions. If enquiries are relevant but unhandled, fix routing and response. Treat advertising as one part of the customer journey rather than assuming every loss is a keyword problem.
What negative keywords should a service business use?
Choose exclusions from actual irrelevant searches and the business's service boundaries. Common categories to investigate include employment, training, parts-only requests and DIY information, but they are not automatically unsuitable for every business. A repair company that also sells parts would need a different approach.
Review the matching behaviour and check whether a proposed exclusion could suppress relevant demand. Document the reason for significant changes. Keep reviewing new search terms as the campaign runs. Copying a large generic negative list without understanding it can remove useful traffic as easily as it removes waste.
Should I send ads to the homepage or a dedicated page?
Use the page that best matches the specific service and decision in the ad. A dedicated service page is often a clearer destination when it explains scope, coverage, cost factors and the next step. It does not need to be a disconnected campaign microsite if an existing page already does the job well.
Check that the page fulfils the promise made in the ad and works on mobile. Test the contact route and measurement. Avoid creating multiple near-identical pages just to match minor keyword changes; give a separate destination a clear purpose and enough information for the customer to make an informed enquiry.
Can I judge a campaign by cost per lead alone?
Only if the lead definition reflects the business outcome you care about and the measurement is reliable. A cheap form submission from the wrong location is not equivalent to a qualified appointment. A phone-link click may not even become a conversation.
Review qualification rate, follow-up capacity and progression to quotations or booked work alongside the advertising metric. Use consistent definitions over time so comparisons mean something. If tracking changes, note the break in the report. The aim is to understand what the spend produces, not simply to make a dashboard number smaller.
