Choose the profile setup that matches the operation
Start by writing down where customers actually meet your business. A crew that visits homes has a different operating model from a shop with staff receiving visitors throughout its stated opening hours. A mailing address does not, by itself, establish a customer-facing location. Decide the operating facts before editing the profile.
For a business that does not receive customers at its address, follow Google's service-area guidance and hide the address from public display. A hybrid business may show an eligible customer-facing location while also travelling to customers. Do not add a second listing simply because you want calls from another suburb: the business must meet the applicable eligibility rules.
Keep a factual setup brief containing the real trading name, customer contact number, primary service, opening arrangements and website destination. The person editing the listing should use that brief, rather than improvising keyword additions to the name or choosing categories for work the company does not perform.
Turn service areas into a useful qualification boundary
Listing a place is not a promise of visibility throughout it. Choose areas your operation can serve consistently, then explain important exceptions on the website. A contractor may accept planned installations farther away than urgent repairs; a single broad list of towns hides that distinction from customers.
Review recent unsuitable calls. Record whether the problem was distance, service type, property type or availability. If callers repeatedly ask for work outside your scope, compare the profile description, selected services and linked page. A wrong category or vague landing page can create confusion even when the address is correct.
For example, an illustrative gutter company that serves detached homes but not high-rise buildings should make that scope clear on its service page and intake form. The aim is a shared description across the profile, website and person answering the phone, with enough detail to qualify a job before dispatch.
Maintain ownership and a record of changes
Use business-controlled access and appropriate manager permissions so a staff departure or agency change does not strand the profile. Record important edits, the reason for each edit and the date. Keep supporting business documentation available through the appropriate secure account process; it does not belong in public marketing copy.
Check holiday hours, moved premises, changed services and the website link whenever the underlying operation changes. Test the public telephone and contact route from a mobile device. A technically valid listing can still waste leads if it sends callers to a disconnected number or a page that no longer explains the service.
Questions and answers
Can I use my home address if customers never visit?
If your home is your genuine operating base, your business may qualify as a service-area business. However, do not display the home address publicly when customers are not served there. Configure the profile as a service-area business, remove the public address and specify the areas you actually serve.
Before making changes, document how the business operates and check the existing profile for duplicates. If you also receive customers, verify that the location meets the relevant requirements rather than assuming occasional appointments make it eligible. Keep the website wording consistent with the real arrangement.
Will adding more towns make me rank in all of them?
No. A service-area list describes where you work; it is not a control that buys or guarantees map positions. Adding distant places can also produce calls that the business cannot fulfil economically.
Choose coverage from actual dispatch capacity, travel time and the type of work. Then examine qualified enquiries by location. If a valuable nearby area is underserved, review the relevant service page, evidence of work there and the overall local presence. Create a dedicated location page only when it has a useful, distinct purpose and genuine local information. Replacing one town name in otherwise identical copy is not a customer benefit.
What should I do if my profile is suspended?
Read the stated reason and current appeal instructions before changing details. Compare the listing with the eligibility rules, real trading name, address model and evidence of the operating business. Correct identified inaccuracies and assemble the documentation requested through the official appeal process.
Avoid creating a replacement profile to escape the suspension; that can add duplicate-record problems while leaving the original issue unresolved. Record what changed and preserve access information. If an agency manages the profile, agree who owns the appeal and who supplies business evidence. No training or third party can honestly promise reinstatement on a fixed timetable.
Which details should match between the profile and website?
The underlying business facts should agree: identity, contact route, services, actual locations and operating arrangements. The sentences do not have to be identical. Your website can explain exceptions and service scope in much greater detail than a profile field allows.
Start with mismatches that could misdirect a customer: an old number, an address where nobody receives visitors, or emergency wording when only voicemail is available overnight. Check the page linked from the profile, not just the homepage. After correcting the information, make a test enquiry and confirm the team receiving it understands the same service boundary.
