Choose a small roofing test set you can interpret
Start with a question about finding a contractor, a question comparing a material-specific option and a question about your own company's services. Add the town or area relevant to each. Use work you genuinely want to quote, such as planned asphalt replacement or commercial flat-roof maintenance. Do not combine every service, location and adjective into a single prompt; you will struggle to tell what caused a different answer.
Write down why each question matters. A replacement discovery question concerns whether prospective buyers encounter your company. A branded question concerns whether they receive correct information after hearing your name. A homeowner education question concerns whether your guidance is cited, which is a different result again. Keep those groups separate so a favorable branded answer does not disguise a lack of discovery in questions that never mention you.
Record observations that another person can check
For every run, save the exact wording, date, platform and mode, location context, answer and visible source links. Record your company name only when it actually appears. Note separately whether your website is linked and whether the answer recommends your business for the requested job. If the platform produces no AI answer or the request fails, retain that outcome instead of replacing it with a more favorable attempt.
Open the cited pages and make a short factual note. Does a source support metal installation, or only generic roofing? Does the stated coverage include the requested town? Does the answer confuse the company with another business? Mark these as supported, contradicted or not established by the visible evidence. Avoid assuming that a missing citation means a particular directory caused the answer. The log should preserve what you observed without turning a plausible explanation into a finding.
Turn the review into a limited, testable work list
Choose corrections based on customer impact and the strength of the evidence. A wrong phone number or unsupported emergency claim deserves attention before a missing promotional adjective. A material-specific question with no useful page suggests a content investigation; a source pointing to an old address suggests an information correction. Assign each item to a person, record the supporting URL and state how completion will be checked.
Repeat the same core test set after a meaningful interval and keep any new questions in a separate group. If you changed both the prompts and the site, an improvement cannot be cleanly attributed to the site update. Compare answer accuracy as well as appearance. Keep inquiries, estimates and booked work in separate reporting columns. Your assessment can demonstrate a change in observed answers; it cannot establish that an unclicked recommendation caused a roofing contract. Use the findings to choose useful work, not to manufacture a universal AI ranking.
Questions and answers
What is a sensible first test set for a roofing AI visibility assessment?
Use a manageable set that covers the decisions you care about. For example, include an unbranded request for a replacement roofer in your main town, a material-specific installer question, a commercial or residential scenario matching your business, and a question checking your own services. These are illustrative categories, not a fixed requirement. Keep the exact wording and context so the set can be repeated. Run comparable questions more than once if answers vary, but do not treat a handful of observations as representative of every customer. Add questions only when they change a business decision. A small, well-recorded assessment is more actionable than hundreds of prompts with no explanation of what they measure.
What should we do if an AI recommendation cites our site but does not recommend our company?
Record the citation and the absence of a recommendation separately. The page may have been useful for explaining a roofing material or process without being used to select a contractor. Read the question and answer to see whether a business recommendation was requested at all. If the answer is educational, the citation may be the relevant outcome. If the answer recommends contractors, examine whether your page explains the service and coverage needed for that selection. Improve missing facts where appropriate, while avoiding claims that you cannot support. Do not call the citation a lost ranking or assume it means the system disapproves of your business. It shows only the role your page played in that observed answer.
How can we compare roofing AI visibility before and after a website update?
Keep a dated baseline with the original questions, platform, mode, location context and saved answers. After the update, repeat those conditions as closely as practical and record deviations, such as a product change or a different location. Compare the same service groups and the same denominator of attempted runs. Look for changes in factual accuracy, recommendations and citations separately. Add a note listing exactly what changed on the site and when. A more favorable set of answers is an observation worth following, but other sources and platform behavior may also have changed. Avoid presenting it as proof that a particular paragraph or schema update caused the improvement unless you have evidence that supports that conclusion.
Which roofing AI findings should we fix first?
Prioritize statements that could send a customer to the wrong business or create an expectation you cannot meet. Wrong contact details, unsupported roof systems, incorrect service areas and false emergency availability are more consequential than the order in which companies appear. Next, address important service questions for which your own website lacks a usable explanation. Save lower-confidence observations for further testing rather than immediately commissioning new pages. For every proposed fix, identify the public source you can change and the person responsible. Once updated, check the actual page or listing, then revisit the answer later. This sequence distinguishes a completed information correction from a change in AI behavior, which may not happen on the same schedule.
